Liaocheng, a prefectural city under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province, is located in the west of Shandong, adjacent to Jinan City and Tai 'an City across the Yellow River in the southeast, adjacent to Henan Province across the Jindi River in the south, facing Handan City and Xingtai City of Hebei Province across the Zhangwei River in the west, bordering Dezhou City in the north and northeast, between east longitude 115°16 '-- 116°32' and north latitude 35°47 '-- 37°02'. The direct distance between east and west is 114 kilometers, and the direct distance between north and south is 138 kilometers, with a total area of 8628 square kilometers. The city has jurisdiction over 8 counties (cities and districts) and 3 county-level functional areas: National Liaocheng Economic and Technological Development Zone, Liaocheng Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone and Jiangbei Watercheng Tourism Resort.

With a history of more than 5,000 years, Liaocheng is a national historical and cultural city, where the Yellow River culture on behalf of agricultural civilization and the Canal culture on behalf of commercial civilization complement each other. There are more than 400 relics and historic sites in the territory, six sites and two river courses have been included in the Grand Canal World Cultural Heritage list, and 13 national cultural relics under protection, such as the Guangyue Tower of the Ming Dynasty and the Shanshan Guild Hall of the Qing Dynasty. Many of the stories in Chinese classical literature classics such as Water Margin, Golden Vase Plum and Strange Stories from A Studio take place in Liaocheng. It was the place where Yi Yin, a famous minister of the Shang Dynasty, gave birth to Sun Bin, the strategist of Warring States, and where Cao Zhi, king of Donga, invented the music of Fanbei. Among the many famous names such as Cheng Wuji in the Song Dynasty, Xie Zhen in the Ming Dynasty, Fu Yijian in the Qing Dynasty, Li Kuchan in the Chinese painting world, Zhang Zizhong, Nay Sayers Fu Sinian, Ji Xianlin in national culture, and Bao 'er Zhang Haidi.

By the end of 2021, Liaocheng has a permanent resident population of 5,927,900. In 2021, Liaocheng achieved a regional GDP of 264.252 billion yuan, in which the added value of the primary industry was 37.421 billion yuan, the secondary industry 96.847 billion yuan and the tertiary industry 129.984 billion yuan.
