Suqian, or Su for short, was formerly called Xiaxiang, Suyu, Zhongwu, etc. It is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province. Located in the north wing of the Yangtze River Delta and the north of Jiangsu Province, Suqian is a regional comprehensive transportation hub in the north wing of the Yangtze River Delta, and is located in the center of Xuzhou, Lianyungang, and Huai'an. It is an important gateway city in the coastal areas of Jiangsu Province radiating to the central and western regions. It is also a core city in the Xuzhou Metropolitan Circle, the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone, and a node city along the the Belt and Road. As of October 2022, Suqian has jurisdiction over 2 districts and 3 counties, with a total area of 8555 square kilometers. By the end of 2021, the permanent population of Suqian was 4.9990 million.
Suqian is the hometown of Xiang Yu, the overlord of the Western Chu Dynasty, with a history of civilization of more than 5000 years and a history of more than 2700 years. It was the capital of Zhongwu, with a long history and a rich collection of talents. It is known as "the pulse of Chinese civilization, the root of Jiangsu civilization, and the soul of Chu and Han culture". Suqian is one of the birthplaces of liquor culture, and has the title of the capital of Chinese Baijiu. Yanghe and Shuanggou are two famous liquors produced here. Suqian sits on two major freshwater lakes, Luoma Lake and Hongze Lake, and many rivers, such as the Grand Canal, the ancient Yellow River, and the Huaishuxin River, pass through it. Emperor Qianlong stayed here five times in the south of the Yangtze River six times and praised Suqian as "the first advantage of spring".
Suqian is one of the first 12 demonstration cities for the construction of social credit system. It is China's excellent tourist city, national garden city, national health city, and national civilized city. In October 2020, Suqian was rated as a national model city (county) for mutual support. In November 2022, Suqian was awarded the title of "China Textile Industry Base City". In 2021, Suqian will achieve a GDP of 371.901 billion yuan, an increase of 9.1% over the previous year at comparable prices.
