Baiyu County is located in the transition zone from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, belonging to the northern section of Hengduan Mountains and the east bank of the upper reaches of Jinsha River. It is located between 98 ° 36 to 99 ° 56 east longitude and 30 ° 22 to 31 ° 40 north latitude. It borders Xinlong County in the east, Batang County and Litang County in the south, Gongjue County and Jiangda County in Tibet across the Jinsha River in the west, and Ganzi County and Dege County in the north. Baiyu County covers an area of 10591 square kilometers. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Baiyu County was 59524.

In 2019, Baiyu County achieved a GDP of 188086 million yuan.

Baiyu County is a distinctive Baiyu County. Beside the mountains and rivers, the tributary of Jinsha River, Biqu River, passes through the middle, forming two main streets, Hedong and Hexi, covering an area of 200000 square meters. It integrates modern architectural style and national characteristics. There is Haizi Snow Mountain in the north of Baiyu County. The sun shines like white jade, so it is named. First, it means "Bai Zang" in Tibetan. Tibetan customs say that "Bai" is the Dharmapala, and "jade" is the region, that is, the place where the Dharmapala is located, which means peace and happiness.

On September 25, 2018, it was awarded the honorary title of "2018 Comprehensive Demonstration County of E-commerce in Rural Areas" by the Ministry of Commerce. On February 18, 2020, after the study of Sichuan Provincial People's Government, Baiyu County was approved to withdraw from the poverty-stricken county.
