Banma County belongs to Guoluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, located in the southeast of Guoluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the upper reaches of Dadu River, between 99°45 '-- 101°14' east longitude and 32°27 '-- 33°18' north latitude, bordering Aba, Rangtang and Seda Counties of Sichuan Province in the southeast, and adjacent to Seda County and Darii County of Sichuan Province in the west. The north is connected with Jiuji County. The total land area is 6,138 square kilometers, accounting for 8.03% of the total area of the prefecture. As of October 2021, Banma County had 31,794 people in 10,289 households.

On August 27, 2021, Banma County was designated as a key rural vitalization county by the Office of the Central Rural Work Leading Group and the National Rural Vitalization Administration.
