Datong Hui Tu Autonomous County, subordinate to Xining City, Qinghai Province, is located in Hehuang Valley, the eastern part of Qinghai Province, the southern foot of Qilian Mountains, the upper reaches of Huangshui River in the Beichuan River basin, is the transition zone between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Loess Plateau. With an altitude of 2280 -- 4622 meters, the terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast, belonging to the plateau continental climate. The county covers a total area of 3090 square kilometers and has jurisdiction over 9 towns and 11 townships. There are 26 ethnic groups such as Han, Hui, Tu, Tibetan and Mongolian, and it has been named "the Hometown of Chinese Folk Culture and Art" twice by the Ministry of Culture. According to the seventh census, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Datong Hui Tu Autonomous County was 403,368.

In November 2019, Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County was named as the national demonstration County of "Sihao Rural Road" and selected as the second batch of counties (districts) to meet the standards of water-saving social construction. On December 6, 2019, it was selected as a pilot unit to promote the quality improvement of farmer cooperatives in the whole county. On December 31, 2019, it was selected as a national typical county for rural innovation and entrepreneurship. On July 29, 2020, it was selected into the national Health township (county) naming list for the 2017-2019 cycle. In October 2020, it was rated as the national model city (county) of double support.
