Hefeng County, under the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Hubei Province, is located in the southwest of Hubei Province, the southeast of Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, and adjacent to Hunan Province. It covers an area of 2,868 square kilometers. Hefeng County was called Tuoxi, Rongmi and Rongyang in ancient times. It was once the seat of Rongmeili. After the 13th year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1735), it was successively set up as Hefeng Prefecture and Hefeng County. On August 19, 1983, due to the establishment of Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in western Hubei, Hefeng Tujia Autonomous County was abolished, and it was still called Hefeng County and subordinate to Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Western Hubei (renamed Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in April 1993). As of October 2021, Hefeng County has jurisdiction over 5 towns and 4 townships, and Rongmei Town is the resident of the county people's government.
Hefeng is one of the birthplace of Ba culture, is the center of the Xiang-Hubei revolutionary base during the Second Civil Revolutionary War, has been designated as a national Class A old county, national poverty alleviation and development key county, there is a national martyrs' cemetery - Manshan Red Martyrs Cemetery. On April 29, 2019, the People's Government of Hubei Province decided to remove Hefeng County from poverty. On December 9, 2019, Hefeng County was selected into the 7th batch of National Demonstration Zones for Ethnic unity and progress. In 2021, Hefeng County was selected into the national list of counties for the quality and safety of agricultural products.
