Honghu City, a county - level city in Hubei Province, is administered by Jingzhou City. It is located in the central and southern part of Hubei Province, the southeast end of Jianghan Plain, named after the largest lake in the territory -- Honghu. It spans 113°07 '~114°05' east longitude, 29°39 '~30°12' north latitude, faces the Yangtze River in the southeast, and faces Jiayu County, Chibi City and Linxiang City of Hunan Province across the river. West of Honghu bordering Jianli; North East Jinghe and Hannan District, Xiantao City adjacent, a total area of 2519 square kilometers. As of April 2018, Honghu Municipality has jurisdiction over 2 sub-district offices, 14 towns and 1 township.

The terrain of Honghu City slopes gently from the northwest to the southeast. It is the place where the four lakes (Changhu, Sanhu, Belu Lake and Honghu) gather water. It has a subtropical humid monsoon climate with an annual average temperature of about 16.6℃.
Honghu Lake is a wetland of international importance. Honghu is an important wetland nature reserve in China, known as the "kidney of Hubei". Honghu is an observer city of Wuhan City Circle, a member unit of Western Hubei ecological Culture Tourism Circle, and the second batch of pilot cities of urban-rural integration in the province. In March 2019, it was listed as the first batch of counties under the protection and utilization of revolutionary cultural relics.
