Hotan City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Hotan Region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is the political, economic and cultural center of Hotan Region. It is located in the southwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the central part of Hotan Region. It is located between the Karakoram Mountains and the Taklimakan Desert. It has an arid desert climate, adjacent to two counties, with a total area of 585.11 square kilometers. As of October 2022, Hotan City has jurisdiction over 4 streets, 3 towns, 5 townships, and 2 town-level units. According to the data of the seventh national population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Hotan was 501028.

Hotan has a long history. It was once called "Huodan", "Wuduan" and "Hutan", all of which are different translations of the same name. The Western Regions of the Tang Dynasty is called Qu Satana, which means "earth milk" in Sanskrit. In the second year of Emperor Shenjue of the Han Dynasty (60 BC), it was under the jurisdiction of the Western Regions Capital Protector; In the Ming Dynasty, it was renamed Khotan; In 1959, Hotan County was renamed Hotan County; In 1977, it belonged to Hotan area; In 1984, Hotan County established Hotan City. The main attractions of Hotan City include Hotan Museum, Hotan City Tuancheng, Imam Asm Maza and Kunlun Park. On September 20, 2019, Hotan was selected as the "National Green Model Unit List". In October 2020, Hotan was selected as the "National Model Cities (Counties) for Mutual Support". On February 18, 2021, Hotan City was selected as the "2020 National Advanced Counties for Village Cleaning Action".

In 2019, Hotan's GDP was 10766.29 million yuan, the added value of the primary industry was 373.95 million yuan, the added value of the secondary industry was 1462.8 million yuan, the general public budget revenue was 1016 million yuan, and the general public budget expenditure was 6510 million yuan.
