Jingyuan County, subordinate to Baiyin City of Gansu Province, is located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, in the central and eastern part of Gansu Province, in the hinterland of Baiyin City, adjacent to Huining County of this city in the southeast, Yuzhong County of Lanzhou City and Baiyin District of this city in the southwest, Jingtai County of this city in the northwest, Pingchuan District of this city in the north, and Shapotou District and Haiyuan County of Zhongwei City in Ningxia in the north and east. It is 120 kilometers from east to west and 135 kilometers from north to south, with a total area of 5,809.4 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over 13 towns and 5 townships.

Jingyuan County is a famous historical and cultural city in western China and a major cultural county in Gansu Province. It has formed a unique local culture by integrating the Yellow River culture, Silk Road culture, farming culture, folk culture and red culture. There are 138 cultural relics under protection at all levels, including 1 national cultural relic protection unit and 11 provincial cultural relic protection units. Faquan Temple, one of China's top 100 famous temples, is in the same vein as Famen Temple in Shaanxi Province. Its grottoes art is very similar to the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. It has been rated as a 3A national tourist attraction and a provincial forest park.
