Korla county-level city

Korla, a county-level city under Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, is the prefecture-level administrative region capital of Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture. It is located in the middle of Xinjiang, the southern foot of Tianshan Mountain, and the northeast edge of Tarim Basin. It is adjacent to the branch of Tianshan Mountain in the north and the Taklimakan Desert, the second largest desert in the world, in the south. It is the throat of the middle route of the ancient Silk Road and one of the birthplaces of the western culture. It is also an important transportation hub and material distribution center in the northern and southern Xinjiang, and an important political, economic and cultural center in the region. The administrative region of Korla City covers an area of 7268 square kilometers. By the end of 2019, the registered residence population of Korla City was 477710.

"Korla" means "overlooking" in Uyghur language. It is also known as "pear city" because of its famous "Korla fragrant pear". Korla is the first "National Civilized City" in the five provinces and regions in the northwest (evaluated on January 23, 2009).
