Luding County is located in the southeast of Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, in the transition zone from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the Sichuan Basin, bordering Tianquan and Yingjing in the east, Kangding and Jiulong in the west, and Shimian County in the south. It is the only way to enter Tibet and leave Sichuan. The county seat is 236.2 kilometers from Chengdu and 49 kilometers from Kangding. The county seat is 1321 meters above sea level, with 7 towns, 5 townships and 145 administrative villages under its jurisdiction, covering an area of 2165.35 square kilometers. There are 17 ethnic groups including Han, Tibetan and Yi. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Luding County was 84204. It is a mountainous multi-ethnic county with the smallest land area, relatively high population and cultural level, the densest population and rapid economic development in the whole prefecture, and is also the regional trade center in the eastern part of Ganzi Prefecture and the supply base of agricultural and sideline products in all counties in the prefecture, known as the "East Gate" of Ganzi Prefecture. It enjoys the reputation of "Red City".

In 2020, Luding County will achieve a GDP of 2.927 billion yuan, an increase of 3.6% year on year.

In August 2018, with the approval of the provincial government, Luding officially withdrew from the list of poverty-stricken counties, becoming the second batch of counties in the province and the first county in the state to remove the "cap" of poverty-stricken counties, and won the honor of "Advanced County in 2017 in the province".

Luding is one of the important tourist attractions in western Sichuan. There are Erlang Mountain, Gongga Mountain, the king of Shu Mountain, Yanzi Valley and Hailuo Valley Glacier Forest Park, a national 5A scenic spot. On May 29, 1935, the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army won the great victory of seizing the Luding Bridge here, and Luding became a famous revolutionary and historical city. Luding Bridge and the Red Army's Memorial of seizing the Luding Bridge also became one of the national youth patriotism education bases.
