Luoding was known as Longzhou and Longshui in ancient times. Guangdong Province governs county-level cities and is managed by Yunfu City. Luoding is located in the west of Guangdong Province, south of the Xijiang River, and is the traffic hub of the Xijiang Corridor. It is known as "the great defense at the gate and the important place to appease Sui" in history. Luoding is one of the most convenient channels to connect Guangdong and the Southwest. It is located at the intersection of the Pearl River - Xijiang Economic Belt, the Great Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao and the Beibu Gulf Urban Agglomeration. The total area of the city is 2327.5 square kilometers. There are about 200000 overseas Chinese, overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who have their ancestral home in Luoding. By the end of 2021, the permanent resident population of the city was 942200.

Luoding has a vast plain landform and unique basin climate. Luoding Basin is the largest basin in Guangdong. Luoding is one of the first batch of famous historical and cultural cities in Guangdong Province and the pilot of fiscal reform in counties directly under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province. In 2018, Luoding Industrial Transfer Park was listed in the national directory and the first rural revitalization training college in Guangdong settled in Luoding.

Luoding has a large number of cultural protection units and outstanding intangible culture. Luoding River (Nanjiang) is an important connecting channel and ancient post road of the sea-land Silk Road. During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, due to the pacification of the "Yao Rebellion" in Luopan, Longshui County, Zhaoqing Prefecture, was upgraded to Luoding Prefecture, becoming the first Zhili Prefecture in Lingnan history. Luoding has formed an open and compatible multicultural feature and a cultural characteristic of pioneering, adventurous, enterprising and innovative.

In 2021, Luoding will achieve a gross regional product (GDP) of 31.219 billion yuan, an increase of 6.0% year on year and an average increase of 4.8% in two years.
