Nanxiong City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, is managed by Shaoguan City and directly under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Provincial Finance. It is located in the northeast of Guangdong Province, at the southern foot of Dayu Ridge, adjacent to Jiangxi Province, with a total area of 2326.18 square kilometers. Nanxiong City is the Central Soviet District County, the National Sustainable Development Experimental Zone, the National Green Model Unit, China's "Hometown of Yellow Smoke", "Hometown of Ginkgo", "Hometown of Dinosaurs", "Hometown of Characteristic Bamboo", and also a civilized city of Guangdong Province, a sanitary city of Guangdong Province, a model county (city) of Guangdong Province, a famous historical and cultural city of Guangdong Province, and a forestry ecological county of Guangdong Province.

In the first year of Tang Guangzhai (684), Zhenchang County was set up. In the fourth year of Qianheng in the Southern Han Dynasty (920), Xiongzhou was established in Zhenchang County. In the fourth year of Kaibao of Song Dynasty (971), Nanxiong Prefecture was established. In the first year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1368), the government was set up. In the 12th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1807), it was changed into Zhili Nanxiong Prefecture. In the Republic of China, it was changed to Nanxiong County, under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the inheritance remained unchanged. In 1996, the county was removed and the city was established.
