Pingyuan County is located in the northwest of Shandong Province, under the jurisdiction of Dezhou City, bordered by Linyi County and Yucheng City in the east and southeast, Wucheng and Xiajin in the west and southwest, Gaotang in the south, and Decheng and Lingcheng in the north. Pingyuan County is located in the northwest plain of Shandong Province in the lower reaches of the Yellow River. The terrain is flat, and the terrain slopes slowly from southwest to northeast. The climate belongs to the north temperate continental monsoon climate, with four distinct seasons and plenty of sunshine. With an administrative area of 1,047 square kilometers, it has jurisdiction over 8 towns, 1 township and 3 sub-district offices.

According to the seventh census, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, Pingyuan County had a permanent population of 419,088.

Pingyuan County is the "grain production base", "Beijing-Tianjin Vegetable Park", "animal husbandry strong county", "pig county", "pigeon town", the Party construction and history expert Zhang Quansheng, the late master of traditional Chinese studies Ren Jiyu, the famous writer Deng Youmei and a number of scholars home.
