Wenquan County, belonging to Bortala Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is located in the northwest of Xinjiang, in the upper valley of Bortala River, at the northern foot of the western Tianshan Mountains and at the western edge of Junggar Basin. It is adjacent to Bole City in the east, separated by Zhentao Mountain and Huocheng County in the south, and adjacent to the Republic of Kazakhstan in the west and north by the boundary of Kongoruoobo Mountain and the western section of Aratao. The county is 139.4 kilometers long from east to west and 64.8 kilometers wide from north to south. The arable land area is 490000 mu, the grassland area is 6.19 million mu, and the forest area is 551000 mu. The climate here is warm in winter and cool in summer. It is a continental arid climate with an annual average temperature of 3.6 degrees Celsius. The total annual runoff of surface water is 800 million cubic meters, the underground water reserves are 310 million cubic meters, and the theoretical water energy reserves are 279000 kilowatts. In December 2018, Wenquan County was rated as the national climate symbol of climate ecology.
In July 2020, the National Health Council confirmed that Wenquan County was the national health county in 2019.
