Xinshao County belongs to Shaoyang City, Hunan Province, located in the north of Shaoyang City, central Hunan Province, between Shaoyang Basin and Xinlian Basin, the terrain is high in the south and low in the north. Water runs through the whole territory. The geographical coordinates are 111°8 '~111°5' east longitude and 27°15 '~27°38' north latitude. Lianyuan City in the northeast, Shaodong City in the southeast, Shaoyang City and Shaoyang County in the south, Longhui County in the west, and Xinhua County and Lengshuijiang City in the north. The total area is 1763 square kilometers. According to the seventh census, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Xinshao county was 612,943. It has a total population of 811,136 (2012). Jurisdiction over 13 towns and 2 townships. In 2012, Xinshao County achieved a GDP of 859 million yuan. The eastern mountain is Dalong Mountain (commonly known as Longshan by local people, there is Hunan Baili Longshan National Forest Park), the central mountain is Jinlong Mountain, and the western mountain is Tianlong Mountain.

On April 16, 2019, the People's Government of Hunan Province, through a field inspection and a third-party field assessment, confirmed that Xinshao County met the conditions to be removed from poverty alleviation.

In 2020, the GDP of Xinshao County reached 16,685.95 million yuan, an increase of 4.0 percent over the previous year.

In July 2020, the National Health Care Committee decided to name Xinshao County as the 2017-2019 National Health County.
