Yushu City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, is located in the southwest of Qinghai Province, the easternmost of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, located in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, covering an area of 15,700 square kilometers. The average elevation of the territory is 4493.4 meters. The terrain is mainly mountainous plateau. Tongtian River, Zaqu and Baqu flow through Yushu City. The climate is cold, the annual temperature difference is small, the daily temperature difference is large, is a pastoral husbandry mainly, agriculture and animal husbandry combination of semi-agricultural and semi-pastoral city. As of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent resident population of Yushu is 141,308 people.

"Yushu" is a transliteration of Tibetan, meaning "site". In the 18th year of the Republic of China (1929), Yushu County was established, and the county government was stationed in Jiegu Town. In 1952, Yushu County was established along the old system. In July 2013, with the approval of The State Council, Yushu County was abolished and Yushu City was established at the county level. In 2021, the GDP of Yushu reached 1.951 billion yuan, and the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 1.149 billion yuan, an increase of 7.6%. Total investment in fixed assets reached 1.413 billion yuan, up 13.1%. The per capita disposable income of all residents was 27,714 yuan, up by 8.5 percent, of which the per capita disposable income of urban residents was 42,995 yuan, up by 7 percent, and that of permanent rural residents was 11,938 yuan, up by 10.1 percent.
