Yushu City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, is located in the southwest of Qinghai Province, the easternmost of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, located in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, covering an area of 15,700 square kilometers. The average elevation of the territory is 4493.4 meters. The terrain is mainly mountainous plateau. Tongtian River, Zaqu and Baqu flow through Yushu City. "Yushu" is a transliteration of Tibetan, meaning "site". In the 18th year of the Republic of China (1929), Yushu County was established, and the county government was stationed in Jiegu Town. In 1952, Yushu County was established along the old system. In July 2013, with the approval of The State Council, Yushu County was abolished and Yushu City was established at the county level.
