Chengde, a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province, is an international tourism city in Hebei Province approved by the Hebei Provincial Government, and a regional central city connecting Beijing, Tianjin, Liaoning and Inner Mongolia. The administrative area of the city is 39511.89 square kilometers. By 2020, the city has jurisdiction over 3 municipal districts, 1 county-level city, 4 counties and 3 autonomous counties. The permanent population of the city is 3.3363 million (by the end of 2021). In 2021, the GDP of Chengde will reach 169.7 billion yuan, an increase of 6.1% over the previous year.

Chengde is located in the transition zone between North China and Northeast China. In the northeast of Hebei Province, it is adjacent to Beijing and Tianjin in the south, Chifeng and Xilingol in the north, Chaoyang, Qinhuangdao, Tangshan and Zhangjiakou in the east and west, 435 kilometers from Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital, and 225 kilometers from Beijing. Chengde is one of the first batch of national historical and cultural cities. In 1703, Kangxi built a summer resort, which became the second political center of the Qing Dynasty; Rehe Hall was established in 1723; In 1733, Yongzheng took the meaning of "inheriting the ancestors' Deze"; The word "Emperor inherits heaven's virtue" means that the first emperor inherited the virtue of heaven and earth to nurture all things; Chengde Zhili Prefecture was established, which was called "Chengde"; It was the capital of Rehe Province in the Republic of China and the early days of liberation; In 1955, the organizational system of Rehe Province was abolished, and Chengde was under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province. In 2012, Chengde was rated as one of the top ten leisure cities with distinctive features in China. In November 2016, Chengde was awarded the second batch of national tourism demonstration zones by the National Tourism Administration of the People's Republic of China. In October 2017, Chengde was selected as a national forest city. In December 2017, it won the "Excellent City Award for Toilet Revolution".
