Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, located in the southeast of Guizhou Province, has jurisdiction over 1 city, 15 counties and Kaili City, the state capital, with a total area of 30282.34 square kilometers. According to the 7th census data, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture is 3,758,622, with 33 ethnic groups living within the prefecture.

The Miao-Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Qiandongnan is high in the west and low in the east, with ravines crisscroping and mountainous stretches. There are 29 original vegetation reserves and nature reserves, among which Leigongshan Nature Reserve is a national nature reserve.

In December 2019, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission named Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture as the "National Demonstration Prefecture for Ethnic Unity and Progress". In June 2020, the Rule of Law Commission of the CPC Central Committee selected it into the list of the first batch of national demonstration areas and projects for building a law-based government.

In 2022, the GDP of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture reached 129.308 billion yuan, an increase of 2.3% over the same period of the previous year.
