Bengbu, referred to as "Clam" and also known as Zhucheng, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province. It is located in the middle reaches of Huaihe River in the northeast of Anhui Province and the Yangtze River Delta region of East China. It borders Suzhou and Huaibei cities in the north, Huainan and Chuzhou cities in the south, Chuzhou and Suqian City in Jiangsu Province in the east, and Bozhou and Huainan cities in the west. It is located in the Qinling Mountains and Huaihe River, the geographical demarcation line between North and south China. It belongs to the transition zone between the humid monsoon climate of the north subtropical zone and the sub-humid monsoon climate zone of the south temperate zone. By 2021, the city has jurisdiction over 4 districts and 3 counties, with a total area of 5,951 square kilometers. As of 2021, Bengbu has 3.317 million permanent residents.
Bengbu is a central city in Huaihe River Basin and northern Anhui Province, which is clearly supported by Anhui Provincial Party Committee and provincial government. It is a national civilized city, a national model city of double support, a national garden city, a national demonstration zone of ecological civilization, a national 100 livable cities, an old industrial base city, an important processing and manufacturing base in Anhui Province, and a core city of Hewubang-independent Innovation Comprehensive Experimental zone. Bengbu is an important comprehensive transportation hub city in East China. With the opening of Jinpu Railway in 1911, Bengbu has become a north-south thoroughfare, land and water hub, and an important logistics town. Bengbu Port is the largest port on the Qianli Huaihe River.
Bengbu is one of the birthplaces of Huaihe Culture. The carved symbols unearthed at Shuangdun Cultural site 7,300 years ago have been recognized as one of the important origins of Chinese writing. The Great Yu, the flood control hero, split mountains and guided the Huai river, summoned the vassals, and left a touching legend that "he passed through his house three times but did not enter". The battle of Gaixia, which laid the foundation of Han Dynasty, interprets the "embattled songs", "Ambush on all sides" and "Farewell My Concubine". Huagudeng, the most representative folk dance of the Han nationality, was honored as "Oriental ballet" by Premier Zhou Enlai and listed as one of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
In 2021, Bengbu's GDP reached 1988.97 billion yuan, 2.1 percent lower than the previous year based on comparable prices.
