Danzhou City, a prefecture-level city in Hainan Province, is an important node city of Beibu Bay City group. It is located in the northwest of Hainan Island, bordering the Beibu Gulf in the west and north, Gao and Chengmai in the east, Qiongzhong and Baisha in the south and southeast, and Changjiang River in the southwest. The city's land area is 3406 square kilometers, accounting for about 1/10 of the province; Coastline 300 kilometers, about 1/6 of the province, in the province's cities and counties in the largest land area, the longest coastline. According to the 7th Population Census, the permanent population of Danzhou City was 954,259 as of midnight on November 1, 2020.

Danzhou, also known as Daner Prefecture in ancient times, was the earliest administrative system in Hainan. It was set up there as early as 110 BC in the first year of Yuanfeng in the Western Han Dynasty. In the fifth year of the Tang Dynasty (622 AD), it was changed to Danzhou Danzhou Prefecture, and to Danxian prefecture in 1912. In March 1993, with the approval of The State Council, Danzhou was transferred from county to city. In July 2008, the Third Plenary session of the fifth Session of Hainan Provincial Party Committee explicitly proposed to build Danzhou into the central city of western Hainan, and gave Danzhou prefectural city power and responsibility. Danzhou was officially approved as a prefectural city by The State Council on February 19, 2015. The provincial Party Committee and the provincial government also explicitly proposed to build Danzhou into a regional central city to drive the surrounding area and radiate the west.

In 2020, the gross regional product of Danzhou reached 35.941 billion yuan, an increase of 0.1% over the previous year at constant prices.

Danzhou City is to be designated as a provincial tourism demonstration zone on November 23, 2022.
