In 214 BC, Emperor Qin Shihuang merged with Lingnan, and Dongguan was under the jurisdiction of Panyu County, Guangzhou. In January 1988, Dongguan was upgraded to a prefecture-level city, directly under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province. Dongguan is one of the birthplaces of Guangfu culture, one of the important birthplaces of Cantonese opera, and also the hometown of Cantonese opera in China. Dongguan is the opening place of China's modern history and the pioneer place of reform and opening up.
