Haikou, also known as "Coconut City", is a prefectural-level city and the provincial capital of Hainan Province, a strategic fulcrum city of "One Belt and One Road", a core city of Hainan free Trade port, and an important node city of Beiwan City Cluster. It is located between 19°31 '~ 20°04' north latitude and 110°07 '~ 110°42' east longitude. It is located in the north of Hainan Island, adjacent to Wenchang in the east and Chengmai in the west. Bordering Ding 'an in the south and Qiongzhou Strait in the north, it is the political, economic, scientific, technological and cultural center of Hainan Province. By 2020, the city has jurisdiction over 4 districts. By the end of 2021, Haikou had a permanent population of 2.908 million.

Haikou is located in the tropics, is a rich coastal beautiful scenery of the southern coastal city. It is located in the northern margin of the low latitude tropics and has a tropical monsoon climate. The year since the Northern Song opened port, has a history of thousands of years. Haikou consists of part of Hainan Island, the outlying islands Haidian Island and Xinbu Island, with a total area of 3,126.83 square kilometers, of which the land area is 2,296.82 square kilometers and the sea area is 830 square kilometers. Haikou has been selected by the World Health Organization as China's first "World Healthy City" pilot site. Haikou has been honored as "China's Charming City, China's Most Happy City, China's Top Ten Cities with Good Life, China's Most Investment Potential City, China's Excellent Tourism City, National Historical and Cultural City, National Civilized City, National Model City with Double Support", and won the annual "China Human Settlement Environment Award" issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. In 2018, it was rated as the world's first "International Wetland City" by the United Nations International Wetland Convention Organization.

In 2021, Haikou achieved a GDP of 205.706 billion yuan, an increase of 11.3% over the previous year.
