Jiyuan, directly under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, is located in the northwest of Henan Province. Jiyuan Industry City Integration Demonstration Zone is the first nationwide industry city integration demonstration zone supported by the National Development and Reform Commission. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Jiyuan City is 727265. Jiyuan City governs 5 streets and 11 towns. The total area is 1931 square kilometers.

Jiyuan City gets its name from the birthplace of Jishui. It is located at the key point of the "Ancient Road", which is the first of the "Eight Xings of Taihang". It is the traffic hub of Henan and Shanxi, and the core area of traditional Central Plains culture. With a long history and splendid culture, it is one of the first batch of famous historical and cultural cities announced in Henan Province. The terrain of Jiyuan is high in the north and low in the south, belonging to the warm temperate monsoon climate. In June 1988, Jiyuan County was abolished and county level Jiyuan City was established. In 1997, Jiyuan City was directly under the jurisdiction of Henan Province. In 2005, Jiyuan City was upgraded to a provincial city. It is one of the 14 core development areas of the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration. In March 2017, it was identified as the national industry city integration demonstration zone.
