Lanzhou is located in the geometric center of northwest China and mainland China, in the middle of Gansu Province. It is a strategic platform for the country to open to the west, an important engine for the development of the west, a demonstration area for scientific development in the northwest, a famous cultural city along the Yellow River with a long history, and a modern central city with international influence in the west. Facing the "Belt and Road", it is a modern and international metropolis in Central Asia, Asia and South Asia.

Lanzhou has a history of more than two thousand years since the Qin Dynasty. Since ancient times, it has been a transportation hub and military fortress "connecting the four regions and covering thousands of miles". Named after the meaning of "Golden City Soup Pool", it is known as the "pearl of the Yellow River". Thanks to the Silk Road, Lanzhou became an important traffic artery and commercial port town. Later, it became one of the earliest cities in China to accept modern industrial civilization. After the founding of New China, it was identified as one of the key industrial bases and became an important national petrochemical, biopharmaceutical and equipment manufacturing base.

In 2012, The State Council approved Lanzhou New Area, the first national-level new area in Northwest China, making it clear that the construction of Lanzhou New Area is an important measure to further implement the western development strategy, and Lanzhou will be developed into a modern metropolis in Northwest China by 2020. In 2017, the Development Plan for the Lanzhou-Xining Urban Agglomeration clearly identified the development of the Lanzhou-Xining Urban agglomeration as an important urban agglomeration that supports homeland security and ecological security and maintains prosperity and stability in Northwest China.
