Liaoyuan, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jilin Province, is located in the central and southern part of Jilin Province. It is located in the upper reaches of Dongliao River and Huifa River. It is named for the origin of Dongliao River here. Liaoyuan has jurisdiction over Dongfeng County, Dongliao County, Longshan District and Xi 'an District. According to the seventh census, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Liaoyuan was 996,903.

Liaoyuan is located in the transition zone from Changbai Mountain area to Songliao Plain. It is mainly hilly with a few low hills in between. It is a hilly region with "five mountains, one water and four fields" in its general geographical profile.

Liaoyuan has a long history and rich cultural heritage. Human activities began in the Bronze Age. It is one of the important birthplaces of the Manchu people. In 1902, the county system was established, and in 1983, it was upgraded to a prefecture-level city.
In 2021, the gross regional product of Liaoyuan reached 46.349 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 7.6%.
