Nanchang, short for "Hong" or "Chang", known as Yuzhang and Hongdu in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city, provincial capital and type-I large city under the jurisdiction of Jiangxi Province. It has been approved by The State Council as an important central city in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the central city of Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone in China. By 2020, the city has jurisdiction over 6 districts and 3 counties, with a total area of 7,195 square kilometers; By the end of 2021, the permanent population is 6,437,500.

Nanchang is located in East China and the north of central Jiangxi Province, the lower reaches of Ganjiang River and Fuhe River, and the southwest bank of Poyang Lake, between 115°27' -- 116°35' east longitude and 28°10' -- 29°11' north latitude.
