Pingliang is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Gansu Province, a sub-central city in Gansu Province approved by the People's Government of Gansu Province, an important node city of the Silk Road Economic Belt, and an ecological livable city in the junction of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia, mainly focusing on cultural tourism and industrial and trade logistics. By April 2020, the city has jurisdiction over 1 district, 1 city and 5 counties, with a total area of 11000 square kilometers. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent resident population of Pingliang City was 1848607.

Pingliang is located in the northwest of China, in the east of Gansu Province, at the junction of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia provinces (regions). It is adjacent to Xianyang in the east, Dingxi and Baiyin in Gansu in the west, Baoji in Shaanxi and Tianshui in Gansu in the south, and Guyuan in Ningxia and Qingyang in Gansu in the north. Pingliang is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization. As early as 3000 years ago, the Zhou Dynasty created a relatively advanced farming culture in the Jinghe River basin. In 376 A.D., the pre-Qin Dynasty destroyed the former cool, and took the meaning of "calming down the cool country", and set Pingliang County. The name of Pingliang began from then on. There are many historical and cultural relics in Pingliang, and 2257 cultural sites of Yangshao culture, Qijia culture and other periods have been found. Kongtong Mountain Daoyuan Culture, Ancient Chengji Fuxi Culture, Western Wangmu Ancient Culture, and Huangfu Mi Medical Culture have unique charm.

In December 2018, the list of the top ten charms of 2018 Charming China City was released, and Pingliang was awarded the "Charming Tourism Poverty Alleviation City of the Year".
