Shanghai, referred to as "Hu" or "Shen", is a provincial-level administrative region, municipality directly under the Central Government of the People's Republic of China, a national central city, a megacity, and a core city of Shanghai metropolitan area. It is approved by The State Council as China's Center of international economic, financial, trade, shipping and scientific and technological innovation. By 2021, the city has jurisdiction over 16 districts with a total area of 6,340.5 square kilometers. By the end of 2021, the city's permanent resident population was 24.8943 million.

Shanghai is located between 120°52 '-- 122°12' east longitude and 30°40 '-- 31°53' north latitude. It is located in east China, on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, along the east coast of the Asian continent, and in the front of the Yangtze River Delta. It faces the East China Sea in the east, Hangzhou Bay in the south, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in the west, and the Yangtze River estuary in the north. Shanghai is a subtropical monsoon climate, four distinct seasons. Shanghai has an average altitude of 2.19 meters above sea level. Dajinshan Island is the highest point in Shanghai at 103.7 meters above sea level. Shanghai river network mainly includes Huangpu River and its tributaries Suzhou River, Chuanyang River, Dianpu River and so on.

Shanghai is a national historical and cultural city. About 6,000 years ago, the western part of Shanghai was already landlocked. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, Shanghai was the fief of Emperor Chunshen, so it was nicknamed Shen. In Jin Dynasty, because the fishermen created fishing tools "Hu", the river flow into the sea called "Hu", so the lower Songjiang area called "Hu", and later changed to "Hu", so Shanghai for short "Hu". In 1292, the Yuan Dynasty set aside the town of Shanghai from Huating County and approved the establishment of Shanghai County, marking the beginning of the city of Shanghai.

On September 27, 2022, the General Assembly of the Worldskills Organization voted to grant Shanghai, China the right to host the 2026 Worldskills Competition. In 2021, Shanghai ranked 9th among the World's top 500 cities.

In 2021, the GDP of Shanghai was 4,321,485 billion yuan, up 8.1 percent year on year. The value added of the primary industry was 9.997 billion yuan, down by 6.5%; The added value of the secondary industry was 1,144.932 billion yuan, up by 9.4%; The added value of the tertiary industry was 3,166.556 billion yuan, up by 7.6%
