Shangluo, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shanxi Province, is located in the southeast of Shanxi Province, at the southern foot of the Qinling Mountains, at the junction of Hubei and Henan provinces, bordering Lingbao, Lu, Xixia and Xichuan in the east of Henan Province. It is adjacent to Yunyang District and Yunxi County of Shiyan City, Hubei Province in the south. It is adjacent to Hanbin District, Ningshan County, Xunyang City, Ankang City and Chang 'an District and Lantian County of Xi 'an City in the west and southwest of Shanxi Province, and is connected to Tongguan, Huayin and Huazhou District of Weinan City in the north, between 108°34 '20 "-- 111°1' 25" east longitude and 33°2 '30 "-- 34°24' 40" north latitude. The east-west length is about 229 kilometers. It is about 138 kilometers wide from north to south and covers a total area of 19,292 square kilometers, accounting for 9.36% of the total area of Shanxi Province. As of October 2022, Shangluo Municipality has jurisdiction over 1 municipal district and 6 counties. By the end of 2021, the permanent population of Shangluo is 2,026,800.

Shangluo got its name from Shangshan and Luoshui. It was first named in the Han Dynasty, referring to Shangluo (county) and Shang (County). In history, Shang Luo Road (also known as Shang Yu Ancient Road) was one of the main roads of Qin Dynasty and the "throat of Qin and Chu". It was the key road for Chang 'an to the southeast and other Central Plains. Scenic spots and historic sites in Shangluo include the 5A-level Golden Silk Gorge, Niubeiliang National Forest Park, Zhashui Karst Cave, Erlang Temple, Fengyang Pagoda, Dayun Temple, Tianzhu Mountain, Moon Cave, etc. Since 2010, the annual China Qinling Eco-Tourism Festival has been held in Shangluo City.

In 2021, the total output value of Shangluo is 85.229 billion yuan, of which the added value of the primary industry is 11.85 billion yuan, the secondary industry is 33.977 billion yuan and the tertiary industry is 39.402 billion yuan.
