Wuhan, abbreviated as "Han" and nicknamed as Jiangcheng, is the capital of Hubei Province, a sub-provincial city, a megacity and a national central city. It is a central city in central China approved by The State Council, an important industrial base, a science and education base and a comprehensive transportation hub in the country. By 2021, the city has 13 districts under its jurisdiction, covering a total area of 8,569.15 square kilometers, with a resident population of 13,644,900 and an urban population of 11,541,500, an urbanization rate of 84.56%, and a regional GDP of 1.77 trillion yuan.

Wuhan is located in the east of Jianghan Plain and the middle reaches of Yangtze River. It is an international wetland city. The city is covered with rivers and hundreds of lakes, and the water area accounts for one fourth of the total area of the city. Wuhan is known as the "thoroughfare of nine provinces", where the Yangtze River and the Han River intersect, forming a pattern of Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang towns across the river. It is an important water, land and air comprehensive transportation hub in China, the center of China's economic geography, and one of the country's four major railway hubs. It is the core city of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the strategic fulcrum of the rise of central China, and the headquarters of the PLA Joint Logistics Support Force.

Wuhan is one of the four major science and education centers in China, one of the three intelligence-intensive areas in China, and a pilot area for comprehensive innovation and reform. It ranks 13th in the global research cities and 4th in the country. By 2021, there are 83 universities and colleges in Han, among which 46 are undergraduate universities, ranking second in China, second only to Beijing. The university has 182,700 graduate students and 1,105,600 college students, ranking the third among cities in China.

Wuhan is a national historical and cultural city and an important birthplace of Chu culture. Since the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, Wuhan has been an important military and commercial town in southern China. The Yuan Dynasty became the province of Huguang province; Ming and Qing dynasties became one of the "first prosperous place in Chu" and "four clusters in the world". The opening of Hankou Port and the Westernization movement in the late Qing Dynasty made Wuhan an important economic center in modern China. Wuhan is the place where the Revolution of 1911 began and occupies an important position in the process of China's modernization.
