Xining City, known as Qingtang City, Xiping County and Shanzhou in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city and provincial capital of Qinghai Province and an important central city in Northwest China approved by The State Council. By October 2022, the city has jurisdiction over 5 districts and 2 counties, with a total area of 7,660 square kilometers. In 2021, the resident population is 2,475,600, and the urban population is 1,963,900, with an urbanization rate of 79.33%.

Xining is located in the middle reaches of Huangshui River valley basin in Northwest China and the east of Qinghai Province. It is the eastern gateway of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the passing place of the ancient "Silk Road" South Road and the "Tangbo Road". Since ancient times, it has been the key road of transportation and military importance in Northwest China, and has been known as the "key to the West Sea" and the throat of sea Tibet. The center of politics, economy, science and education, culture, transportation and communication of Qinghai Province is also an open inland city designated by The State Council and the headquarters of the Xining Joint Logistic Support Center of the Central Military Commission.
Xining has a long history and culture, unique natural resources and colorful folk customs. It is a bright pearl on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which means "peace in the western frontier". It has successively won the honorary titles of National Sanitary City, Top 200 Charming Cities with Chinese Characteristics, China Excellent Tourism City, China Advanced City in Landscaping, National Forest City, National Civilized City and so on. It is a pilot city for the construction of "waste free City".

In May 2018, The State Council issued the Development Plan for Lanzhou-Xining Urban Agglomeration, which aims to integrate into the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, actively promote high-quality and distinctive development, and cultivate and develop Lanzhou-Xining Urban agglomeration into an important urban agglomeration that supports homeland security and ecological security and maintains prosperity and stability in Northwest China. In June 2020, the Rule of Law Commission of the CPC Central Committee selected it into the list of the first batch of national demonstration areas and projects for building a law-based government.

In 2021, the gross regional product of Xining reached 154.879 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 8.1%.
