Zhuzhou, known as Jianning in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province. It is the core city of Changzhu-Xiangtan Urban Agglomeration and one of the urban agglomeration cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Zhuzhou is located in the east of Hunan Province, the lower reaches of the Xiangjiang River, east to Lianhua County, Yongxin County and Jinggangshan City of Jiangxi Province, south to Hengyang and Chenzhou, west to Xiangtan, and north to Changsha. Zhuzhou has jurisdiction over 5 districts (Tianyuan District, Lusong District, Hetang District, Shifeng District and Lukou District), 3 Youxian County, Chaling County and Yanling County, and Liling City. In addition, it has Yunlong Demonstration Area, with a total area of 11200 square kilometers. In 2021, the GDP of Zhuzhou reached 342.03 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 8.3%. At the end of the year, the city's permanent resident population reached 3,883,300.

Zhuzhou is one of the first eight industrial cities built after the founding of New China. It is China's old industrial base. Beijing-guangzhou Railway and Shanghai-Kunming Railway converge here, becoming an important "cross" railway junction in China. Zhuzhou is a part of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Two-oriented society construction comprehensive supporting reform pilot zone. Zhuzhou is also a national green city, a national health city, a national civilized city and a national garden city.

September 2, 2020, by the Ministry of Transport as the national bus city construction demonstration city. On January 29, 2021, it was selected into the list of regions with remarkable achievements in 2020 published by Hunan Provincial People's Government. On February 24, 2022, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the Reply Letter of the National Development and Reform Commission on the approval of the Development Plan of Changzhutan Metropolitan Area and the Reply to the Reform Plan, which officially approved the Development Plan of Changzhutan Metropolitan Area.
