Xinji, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province and managed by Shijiazhuang City, is one of the administrative units directly under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province at the county level. It is located 65km east of Shijiazhuang City, 240km away from Beijing, 220km away from Tianjin, and 120km away from Xiong'an New District. Xinji City borders Shenze County and Anping County in the north, Shenzhou City in the east, Jizhou District and Ningjin County in the south, and Jinzhou City in the west. According to the data of the seventh census, as of 00:00 on November 1, 2020, Xinji has a permanent population of 594,628. Xinji City covers a total area of 951 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over 7 townships, 8 towns, 1 provincial economic development zone and 344 administrative villages.

In 2013, Xinji was listed as a city directly under the jurisdiction of Hebei Provincial Government. It is one of the 100 star counties (cities) in China.
