Yangyuan County is subordinate to Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. It is located in the northwest of Hebei Province, bordering Xuanhua in the east, Yuxian County in the south, Datong City in Shanxi Province in the west, and Huai'an County and Tianzhen County in Shanxi Province in the north. It is 280km from Beijing, 78km from Datong and 140km from Zhangjiakou. Yangyuan County is 82 kilometers long from east to west, 27 kilometers wide from south to north, with a total area of 1849 square kilometers. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Yangyuan County is 205773.

Yangyuan County is surrounded by mountains from north to south, and Sanggan River runs through the whole area from west to east. The landform includes mountains, hills and plains in front of mountains, rivers. The general characteristics are high in the southwest, low in the northeast, high in the south and low in the north. On November 15, 2018, Yangyuan County successfully passed the review and acceptance of building a provincial garden county. On December 27, 2018, after research by the General Office of the People's Government of Hebei Province, Lingshou County, Zhao County and Yangyuan County were agreed to be garden counties in Hebei Province. On February 29, 2020, Yangyuan County withdrew from the list of poor counties and officially lifted its hat.
