Partial Pass, Shanxi Province, Xinzhou City under the jurisdiction of the county. Pianguan County was called Linhu in ancient times, Pianguan Pass and Pianguzhai in the beginning, and Pianguan County in the five generations after it set abatis in the Yuan and Qing Dynasties.
Pianguan County is located in the northwest border of Shanxi Province, where the Yellow River flows south into Shanxi. In the north, it borders Qingshuihe County, Inner Mongolia along the Great Wall; in the west, it borders the Yellow River and Junge Banner, Inner Mongolia across the river; in the south, it is connected to Hequ and Wuzhai counties, and in the east, it borders Shenchi and Shuozhou counties (cities). The county is 60 kilometers long from east to west and 58 kilometers wide from north to south. The total area of the county is 1685.4 square kilometers. According to the seventh census, the permanent population of Pianguan County was 73,382 as of midnight on November 1, 2020.

In 2020, the GDP of Pianguan County reached 3.29 billion yuan, with an average annual growth of 5.65%. Revenue in the general public budget was 239 million yuan, an average annual increase of 5.72%; The per capita disposable income of urban residents was 25,083 yuan, an average annual growth of 5.94%; The per capita disposable income of rural residents was 8,989 yuan, with an average annual growth of 9.85 percent.
Piantou Pass, together with Ningwu Pass and Yanmen Pass, is the first of the three passes outside the Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty, and Piantou Pass is "the screener of the Three Jin Dynasties" and "the key of Northern Shanxi".

On September 25, 2018, it was awarded the honorary title of "2018 E-commerce into Rural Comprehensive Demonstration County" by the Ministry of Commerce. On February 27, 2020, with the approval of Shanxi Provincial government, Pianguan County was removed from the impoverished county.
