Xinyi is called "Xin" for short. Xuzhou takes charge of county-level cities, known as Zhongwu and Siwu in ancient times. It is located at the southern end of the North China Plain, in the north of Jiangsu Province, at the junction of Jiangsu and Shandong Provinces, bordering Tancheng County in Shandong Province in the north, facing Suqian City across Xinyi River and Luoma Lake in the south, adjacent to Pizhou City in the west, adjacent to Donghai County and Shuyang County in the east, and is the "north gate" of Jiangsu Province and the central city of the East Longhai Industrial Belt. The area is 1591.597 square kilometers. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent resident population of Xinyi City is 969922.

In the Stone Age 10000 years ago, Xinyi had traces of human activities. More than 5000 years ago, the famous ancient flower hall culture originated in this beautiful and fertile land, which is an important area for the exchange and integration of Dawenkou culture in the north and Liangzhu culture in the south. Emperor Qianlong spent six years in the south of the Yangtze River and stayed here for many times, leaving him with the praise of "the first river and mountain". In 1949, some areas of Tongyang County and Subei County were merged to form Xin'an County. In 1952, Xinyi County was renamed Xinyi County with the newly opened Xinyi River in the territory. In February 1990, the county was withdrawn and the city was established. In March 2019, Xinyi was listed as the first batch of counties and districts for the protection and utilization of revolutionary cultural relics. In 2019, Xinyi ranked 58th in China's top 100 counties and cities with comprehensive strength, 63rd in China's top 100 counties and cities with economic competitiveness, 69th in China's top 100 counties and cities with investment potential, 48th in China's top 100 counties and cities with green development, 71st in China's top 100 counties and cities with scientific and technological innovation, 53rd in China's top 100 counties and cities with new urbanization quality, and 69th in China's top 100 counties with business environment. It has successively won the titles of National Civilized City (Nominated City), National Sanitary City, National Garden City, National Model City for Double Support, National Top 100 counties and cities for green development, National Top 100 counties and cities for investment potential, National Top 100 counties and cities for scientific and technological innovation, and China's Top 100 industrial counties and cities. In 2020, Xinyi achieved a gross regional product of 69222 million yuan. In 2021, Xinyi City will achieve a gross regional product of 78.143 billion yuan.
