Tongxiang, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province, administered by Jiaxing City, is located in the north of Zhejiang Province, Hangjiahu plain hinterland, east from Shanghai 131 kilometers, north from Suzhou 74 kilometers, west adjacent to Hangzhou 65 kilometers, located in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou Golden Triangle. With a total area of 727 square kilometers, the city has jurisdiction over 3 subdistricts and 8 towns. By the end of 2019, the urban built-up area had reached 52.71 square kilometers. According to the seventh census data, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, Tongxiang's permanent resident population is 1,029,754. Tongxiang is named for the ancient planting of plane trees, meaning "the hometown of plane trees".
