Ningxian County is under the jurisdiction of Qingyang City, Gansu Province. Located in the southeast of Gansu Province, it is separated from Fuxian County and Huangling County in Shaanxi Province in the east. It is adjacent to Zhengning County in the southeast. In the southwest, Puhe River and Jingshui River are separated from Jingchuan County of Pingliang City and Changwu County of Shaanxi Province. The northwest is bordered by Xifeng District. In the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, Yiqu County was set up, and the Northern Prefecture was set up. In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), Ningzhou was changed to Ningxian. In 2002, it belonged to Qingyang City. In February 2020, the People's Government of Gansu Province approved Ningxian County to withdraw from the poverty-stricken counties.
