Tongren, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, is commonly known as "Regong" in Tibetan language, meaning the golden Valley where dreams come true. It is located in the southeast of Qinghai Province and is the seat of the people's government of the prefecture. It is adjacent to Xiahe County of Gansu Province in the east, Guide County in the west and Zeku County in the south, and Xunhua County and Jianzha County in the north. It is about 181 kilometers from the provincial capital Xining City. Jurisdiction over 3 towns, 8 townships, a total of 72 administrative villages, 6 communities, a total area of 3275 square kilometers.
