Golmud City, Qinghai Province under the Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Golmud is located in the central and western part of Qinghai Province and the hinterland of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The terrain of the territory is complex, which can be roughly divided into two parts: the basin plateau and the north foot of Tanggula Mountain, belonging to the typical plateau continental climate. With a total area of 119,263 square kilometers, it has jurisdiction over 5 subdistricts, 2 towns and 2 townships. According to the seventh census, Golmud had a permanent population of 221,863 as of midnight on November 1, 2020.

"Golmud" is a Mongolian translation, also translated into Gaolumu, Guli, Gailmu, meaning "a place with dense rivers"; Golmud is a strategic fortress connecting Tibet, Xinjiang and Gansu in Qinghai Province and a transportation hub in western China. The three main highways of Qinghai-Tibet, Qingxin and Dunga converge here. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway has been fully opened to traffic. Within the territory of the source of the Yangtze River, Wanzhang salt Bridge, snow mountain glacier, Kunlun snow, Han sea sunrise, desert forest and other natural landscape, Golmud Kunlun tourist area is a national 4A level tourist scenic spot. In September 2018, it won the honorary title of "2018 E-commerce into Rural Comprehensive Demonstration County" by the Ministry of Commerce, and was approved by the People's Government of Qinghai Province to quit the poverty-stricken county.

In 2018, the National Health City (district) was re-recognized. The top 100 counties and cities in Western China. On December 31, 2019, it was selected as a national typical county for rural innovation and entrepreneurship. In October 2020, it was rated as the national model city (county) of double support. Golmud's GDP reached 30.59 billion yuan in 2020.
