Changchun, known as Xidu and Chahachong in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city, provincial capital, sub-provincial city, Ⅰ large city and core city of Harbin and Changchun City Group in Jilin Province. It is one of the central cities and an important industrial base in northeast China approved by The State Council. By 2021, Changchun has jurisdiction over 7 districts, 1 county and 3 county-level cities with a total area of 24,592 square kilometers. In 2021, Changchun's GDP reached 710.312 billion yuan, an increase of 6.2% over the previous year. By the end of 2021, Changchun's permanent population is 9,087,200.
Changchun is located in northeast China, the geographical center of northeast China, bordering Songyuan, Siping, Jilin and Harbin respectively. It is the central city of Northeast Asia economic Circle, a famous old industrial base in China and the earliest automobile industrial base and film production base in New China, and is known as "Eastern Detroit" and "Eastern Hollywood". Changchun is a national historical and cultural city, with numerous historical sites, industrial heritage and cultural relics, and is the concentrated witness of the complete course of political and military conflicts in modern Northeast Asia. It is also one of the four major garden cities in China and enjoys the reputation of "Spring City in the North". Its greening rate ranks among the top of major cities in Asia. It is also the pilot city of "Made in China 2025" and the first batch of National Urban Design Pilot Cities. It ranks 37th in the world and 13th in China in the "Nature Index - Research City 2021".
