Taiyuan, abbreviated as "b Descr ng", also known as Jinyang in ancient times and also as Bizhou and Longcheng, is a prefecture-level city, provincial capital and Type-I metropolitan city in Shanxi Province. It is an important central city in the central region and an industrial base focusing on energy and heavy chemicals as well as approved by The State Council. By 2021, the city has jurisdiction over 6 districts, 3 counties and 1 county-level city, with a total area of 6,988 square kilometers and a permanent population of 5,390,957.
Taiyuan is the political, economic, cultural and international exchange center of Shanxi Province, the innovation demonstration zone of the National Sustainable Development Agenda, the military and cultural important town in northern China, the world's Shanxi merchant city, and one of China's important energy and heavy industry bases, as well as China's outstanding tourist city and national garden city. Taiyuan has successfully hosted the second National Youth Games, Central China Expo and China Television Huading Awards and other important large-scale events. On August 13, 2019, Taiyuan was selected as a pilot city for the construction of the national urban medical consortium.
On Oct 31, 2019, Taiyuan was selected as the first batch of 5G commercial cities. On July 30, 2021, the Ministry of Transport named Taiyuan as the national demonstration city of bus urban construction.
Taiyuan is a national historical and cultural city, an ancient capital with a history of more than two thousand years. It is a historical city "controlled by mountains and rivers, standing on the shoulder and back of the world", "the main thrusts of the four fronts and the capital of the five Yuan". The city is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and Fenhe River, the second largest tributary of the Yellow River, flows from north to south. It has been known as the "Splendid Taiyuan City" since ancient times. [2] Taiyuan belongs to the warm temperate continental monsoon climate, with long dry and cold winter, hot and rainy summer, short and windy spring and autumn, and distinct dry and wet seasons.
In 2021, Taiyuan's gross regional product reached 512.161 billion yuan, an increase of 9.2 percent over the previous year based on comparable prices.
