Xiaogan, a prefecture-level city in Hubei Province, was named after Dong Yong, a filial son of the Eastern Han Dynasty, who buried his father by selling his body. Xiaogan is a regional central city in Hubei Province, an important member of Wuhan metropolitan Circle and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River City cluster, and a national comprehensive pilot area for new urbanization. It is also one of the most potential and competitive cities in Central China, with its comprehensive competitiveness ranking top in Hubei Province.

Xiaogan is located in the northeast of Hubei Province, north of the Yangtze River and east of the Han River, bordering Wuhan City. The city is about 60 kilometers away from Wuhan city center and 30 kilometers away from Wuhan Tianhe International Airport. It now has jurisdiction over 1 district, 3 county-level cities and 3 counties, as well as 1 national high-tech zone and 7 provincial development zones (high-tech zones). The city covers an area of 8910 square kilometers. According to the seventh census, Xiaogan had a permanent population of 4,270,371 as of midnight on November 1, 2020. In 2020, Xiaogan achieved a gross regional product of 219.355 billion yuan. In 2021, Xiaogan achieved a gross regional product of 256.201 billion yuan.
