Yangquan, known as "Yangquan" in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shanxi Province, located in the central and eastern part of Shanxi Province, adjacent to Xinzhou City in the north, facing Shijiazhuang City across Taihang Mountain in the east, Taiyuan City in the west and Jinzhong City in the south. With a total area of 4559 square kilometers, Yangquan is located at the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau, belonging to the eastern mountains of Shanxi. The landforms are mainly mountains, and the rest are hills and plains. It is a warm temperate subhumid continental monsoon climate zone. By the end of 2021, Yangquan's permanent population is 1.311 million.

Yangquan City is an emerging industrial city, is the gateway of the three Jin Dynasty, Shanxi Province balance, located in the middle of the two provincial capitals of Taiyuan, Shijiazhuang, 100 kilometers apart. Yangquan is also located in the combination of the developed areas in the east and the central and western parts of China. It is also located in the rational transportation sector of the two economic zones around the Bohai Sea and the Yangtze River Delta, and it can reach the Bohai Sea in the east through the port of Tianjin, Qingdao and Huanghua. There are the ninth Pass and Niangzi Pass of the Great Wall, the Zangshan Scenic spot, the Guanshan Academy, the former residence of Shipingmei, the Liangjiazhai Hot Spring, and the Shiniao Mountain Forest Park, which is dominated by the architectural groups commemorating the battle of the Hundred Tuans. Since the 1980s, Yangquan has taken advantage of coal resources, and its economy has developed rapidly, leading all the cities in Shanxi and being known as "Little Shanghai".

In 2020, Yangquan was selected into the list of National Health Cities. In January 2022, it was awarded the 2017-2020 Ping An China Demonstration City.

In 2021, Yangquan achieved a regional GDP of 91.66 billion yuan, an increase of 17.43 billion yuan, an increase of 6.7% according to comparable prices.
