Binchuan County is subordinate to Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province. It is located at the edge of Yunling Hengduan Mountains, the south bank of Jinsha River, and the southwest of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The main mountains, dams and rivers in the territory are mostly north-south. The terrain is high in the east and west and low in the middle. There are four water systems in the territory: Naxi River, Pingchuan River, Qingshui River and Duobeiqing River. The Naxi River is the largest and runs through the central dam area of Binchuan, with Liandong River as the largest tributary. The county has a total land area of 2563 square kilometers and governs 8 towns, 2 townships and 90 village (residential) committees. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent resident population of Binchuan County was 341319.

Binchuan is a multi-ethnic county dominated by the Han nationality, with 25 ethnic groups living in it. There is Jizu Mountain, a national AAAA scenic spot. On September 29, 2018, Binchuan County was approved to withdraw from the poverty-stricken counties after being studied by Yunnan Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government. On January 22, 2020, it was named the National Garden County by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. On July 29, 2020, it was included in the naming list of national health towns (counties) in the 2017-2019 cycle.
