Chengde County, under the jurisdiction of Chengde City, Hebei Province, is located in the northeast of Hebei Province, 573 kilometers away from Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital, between 118 ° 9 ′ 3.24 ″ E and 40 ° 45 ′ 25.02 ″ N. Chengde is surrounded by the urban area in the east, south and north. The county is 31 kilometers away from the urban area, adjacent to Beijing, Tianjin, Tang and Qin in the southwest, and Liaoning and Inner Mongolia in the northeast. The county covers an area of 3633 square kilometers. Chengde County belongs to the southern Yanshan geosyncline and the northern Inner Mongolia platform back transition zone. The terrain is high in the north and low in the south. It belongs to the temperate semi humid and semi-arid continental monsoon mountain climate of Yanshan, with an annual average temperature of 6~9.1 ℃.

By 2020, Chengde County has jurisdiction over 12 towns, 11 townships (including 2 ethnic townships) and 378 administrative villages. As of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of the county is 340,579 (the seventh population census).

Chengde County is a national model county for greening, a national green well-off county, one of the first batch of national green energy demonstration counties, an expansion county in Hebei Province, a gold medal winner of the "Yanzhao Cup Competition for Livable City Construction", a national garden county, and a comprehensive demonstration county for e-commerce into rural areas. It is also a digital village pilot area in Hebei Province.

On May 5, 2019, the Hebei Provincial Government approved Chengde County to withdraw from the poverty stricken county sequence.
