Fenghuang is affiliated to the Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Xiangxi, Hunan Province, located in the western edge of Hunan Province, the southwest corner of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. It borders Luxi County in the east, Jishou City and Huayuan County in the north, Mayang Miao Autonomous County of Huaihua City in the south, and Songtao Miao Autonomous County of Tongren City in the west. It is between 109°18 '-- 109°48' east longitude and 27°44 '-- 28°19' north latitude. It is 66 kilometers long from north to south and 50 kilometers wide from east to west. It has a total land area of 1745 square kilometers, which is about 0.84% of the area of Hunan Province and 8.12% of the area of Hunan Province. It has jurisdiction over 13 towns and 4 townships.

Fenghuang is a national historical and cultural city, the first batch of China tourism county, national AAAA level scenic spot, Hunan Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture under the jurisdiction of one of the eight counties and cities, known as "west Yungui, east control Chenyuan, north Sichuan Province, south choke Guangxi edge". With a long history, the buildings of Ming and Qing dynasties in Fenghuang Ancient City are well preserved. There are 85 cultural relics under protection at or above the county level, including 2 at the national level and 8 at the provincial level. The county has a total of 116 ancient sites, more than 120 characteristic residences, and more than 10,000 pieces of precious cultural relics and rare fossils, making it one of the counties and cities with the largest number of existing cultural relics and historic sites in Southwest China.

In 2021, Fenghuang County achieved the gross regional product of 5.939305 billion yuan, among which, the added value of the primary industry is 1.27959 billion yuan, the added value of the secondary industry is 1.97628 billion yuan, the added value of the tertiary industry is 6.333717 billion yuan, the tertiary industry structure is 13.3:20.6:66.1.
