Gonghe County is one of the five counties of Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province. It is a county with a large population, a vast territory and a large proportion of animal husbandry economy in Tibetan areas of Qinghai Province. It plays an important role in the economic and social development layout of Tibetan areas in Qinghai Province. Located in the northeast of Qinghai Province, it is the eastern gateway of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, known as the "throat of Qinghai-Tibet". It is close to Qinghai Lake in the north, the "mother river" - Yellow River in the south, bounded by the Riyueshan Mountain and the agricultural area in the east, and adjacent to the Tibetan area in Qinghai Province in the west. By 2021, Gonghe County has jurisdiction over 11 townships (7 towns and 4 townships), 99 administrative villages and 18 neighborhood committees. There are 22 ethnic minorities such as Tibetan, Han, Hui, Sala and Mongolian, among which the ethnic minorities account for 70% of the total population of the county. There are 18,761,600 mu of available grassland and 457,600 mu of arable land. The average elevation of the county is 3,200 meters. In April 2020, Gonghe County was removed from the poverty-stricken county list. The administrative area is 17,209 square kilometers. According to the seventh census data, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Gonghe County is 133,409 people.

In November 2017, Gonghe County was awarded the national Advanced City (district) in the ideological and moral construction of minors.
On September 27, 2019, it was awarded the title of Model Collective of National Unity and Progress.
In 2019, the GDP of Gonghe County was 834.257 million yuan, the added value of the primary industry was 1,038.46 million yuan, the added value of the secondary industry was 4185.51 million yuan, the general public budget revenue was 234.12 million yuan, and the general public budget expenditure was 3108.55 million yuan.
