Gujiao, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Shanxi Province and administered by Taiyuan City, is located in the northwest of Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. It is the national coking coal production base, as well as the transportation hub and commodity distribution center at the eastern foot of Luliang Mountain, connecting the provincial capital Taiyuan and the modern industrial and mining city in the northwest of Shanxi. According to the seventh census, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Gujiao was 210,757.

Gujiao City is located between latitude 37°40 '6 "and 38°8' 9" north, longitude 111°43 '8 "and 112°21' 5" east, 50 kilometers wide from east to west and 53 kilometers long from north to south. Gujiao City is located in the west of Taiyuan Basin, east wing of Guantii Mountain, the main peak of Luliang Mountains, south of YunZhongshan, bordering Wanbolin District of Taiyuan City in the east and Loufan County in the west. It is bounded by Jiaocheng County and Qingxu County in the south and adjacent to Yangqu County and Jingle County in the north, covering an area of 1551 square kilometers. As of 2018, Gujiao has jurisdiction over 4 subdistricts, 3 towns and 7 townships. The urbanization rate is 54.2%, ranking first in Taiyuan and seventh in the province. It is the only county city with an urbanization rate of more than 50% in Taiyuan.
